Frequently Asked Questions

Mowing, Trimming and Blowing

What’s the proper mowing height?

We typically mow our client’s lawns at 3” or more. It’s beneficial to keep your grass longer rather than short. This is because longer grass blades can grow and support more roots and develop a deeper root system that is better able to find water and nutrients in the soil.

What’s included in my mowing service?

Mowing: We will start with the mowing of your lawn and to ensure quality we make sure our blades are sharp. For the health of the grass we change our mowing angle every week. Lawnpro does not bag grass clippings. Grass clippings are mainly composed of water so they break down quickly and provide nitrogen and potassium which is like getting FREE FERTILIZER!

Trimming: For the trimming portion of this service our crews will trim around trees, fences, lamp posts, well caps, foundation of home or any permanent structure where grass is adjacent. This does not include trimming of trees and shrubs.

Blowing: After we have performed the mowing and trimming part of the service, our crew will blow grass clippings off any hard surfaces like driveways, sidewalks, and patios. This does not include leaf blow outs of any area. If by chance your lawn has “clumped” grass after mowing, we will blow the “clumps” out for a tidy appearance.

Can I skip my mowing service?

If you need to cancel a mowing this must be done no later than 24 hours before your regularly scheduled mowing day.

It’s raining today on my mowing day, when will you come next?

Our crew will service your property the following day as long as the weather permits.

Fertilization & Weed Control

You sprayed my lawn for weeds but now I see new weeds popping up?

We cannot guarantee you will never see a weed in your lawn. There are many reasons why we cannot guarantee a weed free lawn.

  • Weed seeds can lay dormant in the soil for years.
  • Weed seeds can be transported into your lawn from various means such as the wind, a bird, nearby soil disturbance, on your pet, on your clothing, and even in your store-bought bird seed.
Do you offer a combination “weed and feed” product?

Lawnpro does not offer a combination “weed and feed” product. When you weed and feed the lawn, it actually requires more maintenance. Also spraying for weeds many times per season contributes to the weeds becoming resistant to the chemicals. This is why we change our weed control chemical formula every couple of years.

Irrigation

How often should I water my lawn?

It all depends on your soil. A good rule of thumb to follow is water deep and for longer periods of time. If you water frequently and in small amounts your grass roots never have the chance to grow deep. Having shallow roots will make your lawn more susceptible to diseases and is not healthy overall. It’s important to make sure you water properly. If you water too lightly then you are just setting up your lawn for trouble when hot weather arrives.

Does Lawnpro install irrigation systems?

Lawnpro provides irrigation startups, adjustments, repairs, and winterizing. Since we are a maintenance company, we do not provide the initial installation of irrigation systems.

Pest Control

Do I have grubs in my lawn?

Since grubs feed on the roots of lawn grasses, damage will appear as browning of the lawn. However, problems such as drought, poor soil, and other diseases can also create damage that appears very similar. Don’t treat for grubs that don’t exist. You can easily check by lifting sod in damaged areas and checking the root zone for grubs. Typically a population of about 12 grubs per square foot can cause lawn damage that requires control.

Will treating for grubs take care of my mole problem?

However, problems such as drought, poor soil, and other diseases can also create damage that appears very similar. Don’t treat for grubs that don’t exist. Aeration

Should I aerate?

Absolutely. It is a regular maintenance service that should be performed on your lawn about every year. It is important to ensure that nutrients can reach the soil beneath your grass. Aeration can be an extremely vital element to a healthy lawn because it allows the grass roots to easily receive water, nutrients, and air so the roots grow deeper for a thicker lawn. Just like your vehicle requires ongoing maintenance such as rotating tires and oil changes. Your lawn requires maintenance too!

How can I prepare for my aeration service?

To avoid damage, please mark your irrigation heads, invisible dog fence and drain tile pop ups before we perform this service.

Dethatching

Should I dethatch?

Yes, you should dethatch. Controlling thatch is one of the most important and often overlooked parts of lawn maintenance. It is a regular maintenance service that should be performed on your lawn about once a year, or whenever the thatch reaches a thickness of about .5”. Just like your vehicle requires ongoing maintenance such as rotating tires and oil changes. Your lawn requires maintenance too!

What is thatch?

Thatch is a light brown layer that builds up between the soil and the living green grass. It may feel spongy and soft, have dry spots despite watering, is thinning and dying despite fertilizing, and appears scalped or brown after mowing. Contrary to popular lawn myth, leaving clippings on the lawn does not cause thatch. Thatch is a combination of living and dead plant matter including crowns, stolon’s, rhizomes, roots.

Is thatch healthy for my lawn?

Some thatch is good for your lawn because it can conserve water and protect the soil. Thatch only becomes a problem when the organic matter between the green grass and the soil builds up faster than it decays. It may look somewhat harmless, but it makes it harder for sun, water, and fertilizer to reach your lawns soil and grass roots. Thatch can also become a breeding ground for pests and disease.

How can I prepare for my dethatching service?

To avoid damage, please mark your irrigation heads, invisible dog fence and drain tile pop ups before we perform this service.

Clean Ups

How does Lawnpro charge for clean ups?

We do things differently here at Lawnpro and we charge by the man hour. One day your lawn may be completely leaf free and the next day mother nature could have caused the wind to blow all your neighbor’s leaves into your yard. That way you are only paying for the debris that was removed from your property on that service day.
